Bandwidth for Africa

Seacom has already begun erecting landing stations. Brian Herlihy cannot contain his excitement. He’s the man behind the Seacom consortium, which is building the new US 600m undersea telecommunications cable that will connect SA with East Africa, India and Europe.
Seacom has already begun erecting the landing stations that will bring high speed Internet access to countries in East Africa for the first time.

Herlihy says the cable has the potential to bring cheap broadband to the region and change the way people on the continent communicate.
The 15 000km system, which should go live by June next year — in plenty of time to carry television signals from the 2010 soccer World Cup in SA — will ultimately carry data at about 11 times the design capacity of the established Sat-3 system that runs along Africa’s west coast."Read full article here. SXSW Africa 2.0 Preliminary Report

[All Photos by Martin Kliehm From Frankfurt and Main Germany]
The SXSW Conference was absolutely fantastic! From March 7th-16th, about 400,000 people converge on the city of Austin to talk music, film and interactive media and seriously party like rockstars! The local news reported the City of Austin estimated making approximately $100 million from the SXSW conference. Wow!

AUSTIN CITY BABY! I loved, loved Austin. Austin is known as Silicon Hills as opposed to San Jose's Silicon Valley. There are high tech companies like DELL, APPLE, HP, INTEL and lots more. Austin is the headquaters of Whole Foods Store and boy is it gorgeous in there or what?!! There are lots of Californians that have moved to Austin and it's easy to see how as the technologically savvy environment is balanced with a laid back approach reflected even in the casual wear seen on the residents of Austin. There are quality restaurants everywhere you go and the live music scene is well and alive! Now get this, Austin has lots of money. Seriously, you don't hear me. I stayed at the Marriot South by the Austin airport and I noticed four other Marriot chains on the same street on the same block next to each other and guess what? They were all sold out of rooms! The managers informed me this is a common thing. They always have events and sell out of rooms quickly. Austin is a cool place to visit.

BUSINESS OF TECHNOLOGY:Technology as we already know is BIG business. There were so many companies marketing their products at SXSW from Dell, Zappos, IKEA, Google, Yahoo and more. Dell even had a lounge where you could chill with your Dell laptop and every few hours/on schedule, they had artists performing. SXSW also had amazing seminars on start-up businesses. One of the things I notice, again and again, is that while industries might be different i.e. technology, the business principles and lessons stay the same. It held true at the SXSW event so you can get some good advice as an entrepreneur, even though your business is fashion, for instance.

GEEK LAND & FASHION BLOGGERS
FASHION BLOGGERS: Lord have mercy! At least on the interactive media end of things, there was no denying that I was in the midst of geek land. It was evident from the many with laptops that had their face buried in those sleek sexy things. I loved it! Geeks and I are like bread and butter.Okay don't take me literally but I'm down with geeks. In spite of my excitement of being in a space filled with [g]eeks and trying to find a match for Ladybrille, of course!, I could tell when the geeks were being replaced by the film and music festival folks because the fashionistas became more prominent with their hot trends off the runway. Speaking of fashion, fashion bloggers were in the house representing. Fellow bloggers up for the Fabbies Fashion Awards: Style Hive, Coquette and Budget Fashionista made appearances. The beauty and brain, Natalie Zee Drieu, behind Coquette organized a fashion technology panel. Check out the video here.TECHIE CELEBRITIES: There were some techie celebrities in the house like Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook, Frank Warren founder of Post Secrets, I enjoyed his keynote, and so many more dynamic influencers in the technology and non-technology world. Yes, respect these techie celebs because the ladies do fall over some of them. We think it's a combination of their heavy wallets and geeky looks. Take for example, Sarah Lacy, Business Week 2.0 Expose writer. Gurlfriend did not know how to behave when she interviewed Zuckerberg and you best believe she got chewed out by the techies and geeks on the internet! Here is the video. '>Watch at your own Peril. The music industry celebs were also present and in fact you can catch a free concert on March 15th at 8:00pm in Austin with Ice Cube, Talib Kweli and Jean Grae if hip-hop floats your boat. These celebs are also at SXSW to see how technology is changing music reality for them and their fan base.
NETWORKING: SXSW is a great place to network, network, network and network some more. I met so many cool innovators, CEOs, Presidents and Vice Presidents of start-ups, digital media groups and much more. I got invited to speak at upcoming non-SXSW conferences in the, sampled and saw demos of great technology, technology that is not even on the market till 2-3yrs down the line, met super smart web developers and kept an eye for the right personalities and brilliant minds that can be a match for Ladybrille as we position ourselves and continue to highlight Ladybrille as an innovator and pioneer for bringing African Fashions and its industry directly to Western consumers. By the way, thanks to ICY PR for the wonderful postcards they did for Ladybrille SXSW Africa 2.0 event complete with a 2008 calendar and delish websites. It made an impression especially with the networking.

AFRICA 2.0 PANEL:I am glad G. Kofi Annan had the foresight to propose such a panel and that it was approved! The space provided for our panel was quite large and the turnout was wonderful!!! People were open and had a real curiousity to see what Africa was doing on the technology end and how they could use technology to make change in Africa from tourism to fashion and everything in between. We'll be sure to get the podcast of the panel once it becomes available. I also had privilege of being interviewed by three studios that wanted to know all about the concept behind the brand Ladybrille. I spoke about that and used the opprtunity to debunk stereotypes about African fashions, and identified African designers likely to break into the USA market in a big way.

I think the icing on the cake was when the producers of SXSW invited myself and Kofi Annan the moderator and blogger at Annansi Chronicles for a chat at their SX Studio 2008. Kofi and I had lots of fun interviewing each other. We introduced our very attentive American audience to issues in Africa's technology industry but expanded our talks to include African fashion and entertainment industries including celebrities in the USA making Africa look sexy, musical collabos, Nollywood and certainly the upcoming concert in honor of Bono where the creme de la creme of African artists will sing U2 songs in celebration of Bono's work and contribution to Africa.
Again, lots of fun and I was honored to be a part of such a huge platform to take the Ladybrille message to an even diverse audience. Stay tuned later this month as we bring you a bit more updates, the podcasts/videos including some of the technology trends we found that might be applicable to you.

TAN Conf 2007: Is Entrepreneurship Teachable?

From L-R: Peter Ojany [Intel], Chinedu Echeruo [Hotstop.com], Gordon Williams [Co-founder & CFO of TAN], Sade Sobande [TAN Con 2007 Chair], Yemi Lalude[Founder and Managing Director Adlevo Capital], Front: Uduak Oduok [Ladybrille.com], Bolaji Olutade [President/CEO of TAN]

Palo Alto –CA, October 16th, 2007, “Is entrepreneurship teachable?" Can we really teach Africans how to manage and run successful companies? This was the provocative question asked by one of TAN Conf 2007’s attendee; who was a former ambassador to the USA for Rwanda during the Clinton administration.

TAN Conf 2007 held at the sleek Four Seasons Hotel in Palo Alto, answered the question via dynamic speakers with a wealth of experience in and out of Africa and a very interactive audience. Kicking things off, in a room full of aspiring, new and established entrepreneurs, was Jack Holden who was the morning’s key note speaker. Holden, a veteran entrepreneur and current Founder/Director of Gold Star, a Biodeisel company head quartered in Ghana, spoke largely about his experiences and doing business in Africa. Holden expressed the difficulty of getting the West to see Africa as a great investment opportunity-- he has spent over 27years trying to do so. Nevertheless, he encouraged all interested in investments in Africa to not give up.

Jack Holden with TAN Conf 2007 guest

END THE 9-5
Following Holden was what would be intermittent breaks and networking opportunities sprinkled throughout the duration of the conference. Shortly after one of such breaks, a panel consisting of Chinedu Echeruo [Hotstop.com], Nosa Omogui [Director of Strategic investments with Intel Capital [ICap], Ike Eze [Entrepreneur and Private Investor] and Yemi Lalude [Founder and Managing Director of Adlevo Capital] convened to discuss how aspiring entrepreneurs could transition from their 9-5 to full fledged entrepreneurs. All emphasized it began with the idea. “Most people have the ideas but [d]o not believe in their ideas enough to quit their 9-5
jobs,” said Eze. “[B]elief is important,” said Echeruo. “Added to belief is research and the time to research because only at that point is where you are able to process whether it is a full time job,” added Echeruo. Echeruo provided even more pragmatic steps. He suggested budding entrepreneurs put their ideas on paper, create a 20 page slide, if possible, for presenting to team of investors and get the word out via a clear marketing plan.

Lalude offered his take on doing business in Africa explaining that actual formal market research process might not necessarily work. “I had a hypothesis, went to Africa and confirmed it with the people,” said Lalude. “There are things we take for granted that we can not do the same in Africa [e.g.] infrastructure, resources and human resources and these things must be considered if you decide to start your new venture in Africa,” said Eze. “In Africa, it is tougher to find people who can invest in your projects or venture.”

Eze stated that in case you just decided to quit your big firm in the USA to move to Africa to start your business, there are some key things you needed to do. First, evaluate the industry you are in. Second, understand that if it is an industry that requires capital, you might need to be there locally on the ground. Third, he further advised the need for sincerity and honesty with self. Ask, is there a market? Is there a product? Do I have a good team?

SHOW ME THE MONEY
Needless to say, after you quit your job to become an entrepreneur, it is only a matter of time before you start screaming Jerry Maguire’s “Show me the Money!” Moderated by Doug Kelly, Partner at Alloy Ventures, the panel on “Raising Capital” explained you could find money from family, friends, banks or a Venture Capitalist. “Go to a Venture Capitalist with the idea that he/she is looking for a reason not to invest,” said Eghosa Omoigui, one of the panelist. You should be prepared to truly say, “I have a product that matches the problem, it is a big problem, I have the right people to execute the vision, my product can be differentiated in the market place and I can make you lots of money.” The panel also stressed the importance of due diligence, especially when it came to finding the right investors and their motives for investing in your business.

THE LEGALESE
Of course whenever there is cash-money discussions, lawyers are a necessity. As such, the panel consisting of Olatunde Simoyan [Associate at Wilson Sonsini, LLP], Barry Kraemer [Partner at Fenwick & West, LLP]and Khoa D. Do [Partner at DLA Piper] got together as they picked up from the previous panel to discuss legalese. Keeping it lively with a skit, sorry there was no dancing, Kramer along with Bisi Akinola [Associate at Fenwick & West, LLP who played the role of a soon to be entrepreneur], addressed intellectual property issues—making sure you own your work and not soliciting current employees of your ex-employer for your new venture [depending on employment agreement in place]. Like an engagement that has been called off, they stressed that you are expected to give the ring back! So, do not take the business customer list, list of employees, technical information, laptops keys and phones of your ex-employer. The panel also touched on the right legal structure for your new venture [C Corp, LLC and S Corps], allocating shares, termination clauses, roles/expectation of the founders among the many issues they covered to avoid landing in murky legal waters.

CUSTOMER IS THE DECISION MAKER
With all that legal drama and issues to ponder, it was time for lunch, provided by TAN, and more networking! After lunch, the event resumed with an inspiring speech from another key note speaker Kenneth Coleman, Chairman of Accelry’s. "Understand you [a]re in the people business and that no matter how great a vision you have, you will not understand it till it is in the hands of the customer,” said Coleman. “Talk less and listen to the marketplace, [the]consumer.” Coleman encouraged TAN Conf 2007 attendees to have strong work ethic, “self confidence and the ability to stare down the possibility of failure.” He concluded his speech by saying, “[While] you work hard [and] have achievements, it is important to make time for family, friends and community.

TAN Conf. 2007 concluded with Holden and his team at Gold Star sharing their success stories in Africa and other success stories such as Kunle Olukotun [Professor at Stanford Univeristy] and Abi Adeoti [Director of Finance and Startegy at Intuit Inc]Matt Flannery, co-founder and CEO of KIVA.org. also sharing their success stories.
