Georges Chakra, Fall 2009 Collection is Res Ipsa Loquitor!

Photobucket
Res ipsa loquitor is a Latin common saying in the legal field. It means, "the thing/evidence speaks for itself." Georges Chakra's Fall 2009 Collection is simple Res Ipsa Loquitor. Bold, strong, feminine, dramatic and downright gorgeous, you are guaranteed, if caught in one of these designs, to make a very brilliant breathtaking statement without saying a word.

STONED CHERRIE: ThisDay/Arise Magazine, African Fashion Collective Fall 2009

Photobucket
Silk charmeuse, silk chiffons, silk taffetas and shwe shwe are some of the fabrics Stoned Cherrie played with for Fall 2009 at the ThisDay/Arise magazine: African Fashion Collective show. Inspired by the now deceased South Africa/African Music Icon, Miriam Makeba, Nkhensani Nkosi [designer behind Stoned Cherrie] did not hold back with beautiful bold colors reflected in blouses, skirts, dresses and accessories. Trend alerts included vibrant torquoise blue and yellow tights.

Careful attention to design details was obvious throughout her designs with cute puffy sleeves on a embroidered sexy mini-dress, glamorous cascading ruffles on a green silk charmeuse blouse whose shwe shwe collar and abstract green banded cuffs made it a winner for the office, board or court room. Yet another showing of careful attention to details was her jeweled collar beautiful orange silk chiffon dress modeled by Supermodel Alek Wek. At times, however, it appeared Nkhensani was trying to do too bit much and could use a little editing, more so from a styling perspective. For example, an overpowering cascading ruffled skirt was paired with an equally overpowering long sleeve blouse.

Overall, a very chic collection fitting for the career minded Ladybrille woman.

XULY BET: ThisDay/Arise Magazine, African Fashion Collective, Fall 2009

Photobucket
Xuly Bet having Grace Jones open his collection was the forecast into designs that screamed "Look at me!" for Xuly Bet's Fall '09. There were animal print fur coats, slinky maxi length tee shirt dress with Obama's face on it, [latex leggings],blouses and dresses, velvet suits in red and black, charcoal denim jackets, jumpsuits and some rather neat accessories like large red and white checkered table cloth tote bags, money tote bags and funky jewelry and shoes.

The collection was strong and there is something for every Ladybrille woman; from funky chill to a bit more serious look via his velvet suits.

MOMO: This/Day Arise Magazine, African Fashion Collective Fall 2009

Photobucket

In these very tough economic times where fashion designers have scaled back on shows at New York Fashion Week and some not show at all, for each African Fashion designer who showed at fashion week, there had to be something that made each one stand out when pitied against their American/International counterparts. Something memorable. Basically a 'umph' factor that gets the press going and buyers excited to order knowing that it will rejuvenate and make customers spend, again.

The designs shown by Fati Asebuela, the designer behind the label MOMO, failed to do so. In fact, MOMO's designs played safe--too safe to the point where it crossed over to the land of "just there" i.e. unmemorable. Her Fall '09 collection while nicely tailored, lacked a unique identity that would make any fashion-forward woman forgo spending on a label she is used to for a MOMO design. We hope next season, if she shows, that she BRINGS ON THE FIERCENESS.
