City of Sacramento to host 150 Wounded Warriors in “Thank You for Your Service” event

May 4, 2011

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – "Thank You for Your Service" is a one day sports event for 150 wounded, ill or injured Guard and Reserve U.S. Army soldiers who are in the Community Based Warrior Transition Unit. They will participate in wheelchair softball, wheelchair basketball, swimming, scuba, handcycling, tandem cycling, shot put, discus, javelin, and rock climbing on a climbing wall. These soldiers are all working toward recovering and transitioning either back to regular duty or to separate as civilian veterans.

“Thank You for Your Service” is a city sponsored event through the Paralympic Sport Sacramento Club, which includes the City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and Recreation- Paralympic Sport Sacramento Club and four additional Northern California Paralympic Sport Clubs from Lake Tahoe, Bay Area, San Jose, and Mammoth Lakes.

Media are welcome and invited to attend; Warriors will be available to speak with media in between sports sessions.

Ladybrille Magazine Names Edi Gathegi “X-Men: First Class” Actor Man of the Month for April 2011!

--Ladybrille Magazine, a digital magazine founded in 2007 to re-brand the images of Africans in the USA & Europe, announced today that Hollywood Actor Edi Gathegi is its Man of the Month for April 2011. The “Ladybrille Man of the Month” is a monthly feature which celebrates outstanding men, locally and internationally, for their brilliant contributions to their communities at large.

“Edi was a natural fit for us for our April 2011 Film Edition,” said Uduak Oduok Editor-in-Chief and Founder of Ladybrille Magazine. “Beyond the charisma and attention he commands when he walks into a room, he is an actor driven to achieve excellence and to improve on his craft daily; which is why we have also dubbed him a fierce actor. We are delighted to celebrate him and all of his accomplishments this whole month of April.”

Gathegi,of Kenyan heritage, was born in Kenya but raised in California, USA. He began acting a little over four years ago, but has managed to land highly coveted roles in major motion pictures including in the film Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (the sequel). His latest major motion picture is the upcoming “X-Men: First Class” film where he plays the mutant Darwin. The film is scheduled for release in theaters on June 3rd, 2011.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as a fierce actor,” said Gathegi. “[I am] humbled to be selected as a Man of the Month.”

Gathegi is in good company. Past Ladybrille Magazine Men of the Months have included Jimmy Jean-Louis, Hollywood Haitian Actor and Humanitarian; and Amobi Okoye, NFL Houston Texans Defensive Tackle.

STOCKTON, CA, March 11, 2011, – The ever-popular Nearly New Sale, put on by the Fashion Club of Delta College will be held Friday, April 8, 2011 from 10 am to 4 pm in Danner Hall on the Delta College Campus.

The Fashion Event Production class and the Fashion Club at Delta College will be transforming Danner Hall into a full retail environment, dressing rooms and all! Customers will be able to get their hands on some brand-new and nearly new apparel and goods from name brand names like William Rast, Calvin Klein, UGG, Coach, Guess, TSD, Michael Stars, Betsey Johnson, GAP, BCBG MaxAzria, and more, at garage sale prices, with some items starting at just $1. The inventory includes apparel for men, women and kids, prom & formal dresses, home goods, shoes, accessories (scarves, wallets, handbags) and gift items, all donated from retailers and manufacturers in the apparel industry.

This year Gary Long’s jewelers has donated some semi-previous and sterling jewelry, Cut Loose sent four large cases of women’s apparel, Flair Boutique generously donated some gorgeous women’s wear, Maxine’s Bridal gave prom dresses, even the Haggin Gift Shop donated some great jewelry! There is an abundant amount of inventory and amazing deals!

Other the retailers that have supported the event have included Stockton retailers like With Garden Flair, CR Porter, Boggiano's, Stage Two, Theadora, Foot Solutions, Spike’s Men’s Shop, Maxines Bridal, Bellas Bridal, Sundance Sports, DeVons Jewelers. Lodi supporters have included City Girl, 2 Plus 2, Pret, PDC The Boutique, Spectator, Willow Tree, Sierra Adventure Outfitters. From San Francisco, inventory has been donated by Weston Wear, The Sak, Cut Loose, Flax, Inc., and in Berkley from Two Star Dog. Pottery World in Rocklin has also donated to the event’s inventory!

The average price of jeans is $5, designer denim is priced from $10, shoes start at $5, t’s and tanks from $1, dresses $5 and up and accessory prices vary from $1 to $10 depending on the product. But, all prices are rock bottom, way below wholesale.

Since the inventory is donated, it varies from semester to semester, but always features great brands and unbelievable prices! This event is so popular that people come from as far away as Sacramento, Modesto and the Bay Area and a line is formed at the door several hours before the opening time!

The students involved in planning the event have developed it from start to finish, creating a marketing plan, soliciting donations on behalf of the program from local and out of town boutiques, manufacturers and retailers. This is truly a showcase of the students’ learned skills, diligence and passion from within the Fashion Program. The students have to solicit merchandise, price it, display and merchandise it and sell it…. Everything they will do in the merchandising trade.

The Nearly New Sale has been covered by Good Day Sacramento and the Record and has had customers drive from all over the Northern California area to attend. The Fashion Program Director, Leslie Asfour says, “the experience for fashion students is invaluable. It’s a real-world application of everything they have learned. And, since the funds directly benefit them, from the fashion event on the 6th, where their work will be show cased to the industry tours, like New York in June, the event is worth their time and energy. So it benefits both the producers (students) and the customers who attend, because the deals are amazing. It’s a win-win!”

Fashion Merchandising student, Camille Wall, commented, “The Nearly New Sale is probably the best hands-on experience a student in this major can get! This will be my 3rd sale I’ve worked on, and each time is different. Every time we are presented with different challenges and each time, it’s been a pleasure working with Leslie and my fellow students in problem solving. We’ve put a lot of hard work into this event and we hope to have another successful sale this semester. I’ve also done my fair share of shopping and the prices cannot be beat! Come early, there is usually a line!”

This is one of the club’s major fundraisers and the monies raised will benefit the Fashion Scholarship fund, including all financial support for the annual Story of Design Fashion Show, which will be held at the end of the semester on Friday, May 6th. The Story of Design is a showcase of student work in apparel design, fashion merchandising, retailing, marketing, illustration and interior design.

Women in Film International Committe & Universal Studios Present: “Out of Africa: A Night to Celebrate Short Films by Kenya’s Filmmakers


Women in Film’s International Committee’s and Universal Studios present "Out of Africa: A Night of Kenyan Film and Culture" Event. The event will be held Saturday March 5th, 2011 from 6pm-11pm at Universal Studios.

The evening will be hosted by Actors Edi Gathegi (X-men:First Class, Twilight, The Twilight Saga:New Moon, and Fox’s House) and Ida Onyango (Days of Our Lives and Tears of the Sun) at Universal Studios’ Stage 29 located at 100 Universal City Plaza in Universal City, Calif.

Many elite and talented Kenyan artists, musicians and filmmakers will be on hand, including world-renowned artist Wangechi Mutu. Ms. Mutu was named Artist of the Year by the Deutche Guggenheim in 2010 and has art featured in museums across the nation and abroad.

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, a 2010 Literature Nobel Prize Nominee, will use this special occasion to present his latest book “Dream in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir.”

Distinguished guests also include visual artists Jesse Allen, Githinji wa Mbire, Wawi Amasha and Racheal Wangui; with live musical performances by Kenyan recording artists Karis and Nasambu and Kenyan dancers.

Since 2007, the WIFI Shorts Program has celebrated filmmakers from around the world with a goal of exploring a new country every year and bringing its art, history and culture to communities in Los Angeles. Focusing on Kenya, this year’s event promises a live, rich cultural experience of art, food, music and dance that is rarely found outside of Africa.

The event’s main attraction is a screening of seven thought-provoking short films, some being shown for the first time in the United States, that are very dramatic and at the same time giving light and hope for the future. They all provide a real look at Kenyan life, adversity and triumph. The screening will be followed by a Q&A segment lead by actor Owiso Odera with a panel of filmmakers from the Kenyan community.

FILMS BY KENYAN FILMMAKERS
Through a diverse program of short films, this year’s series will celebrate and support the creative talents of Kenyan filmmakers. Every filmmaker has a unique perspective on their culture and their world. The films selected both narrative and documentary, will provide views into the psyche of these communities and deepen our understanding of Kenyan life, land, and cultures.

EXPERIENCE FILM, MUSIC, ART, CUISINE AND CULTURE
Come and experience the traditions and culture of Kenya! The short films shown at this special event are the apexes of an entire evening of artistic expression.

While tasting the culinary delights of Kenya, make certain you also enjoy the display of amazing art. Experience the rich traditions and history of Kenya as you stroll through the exhibition.

The reception will be catered by Titus Karanja and Kache Mwaro and there will be a hosted bar.

The books Wizard Of The Crow and Dreams In A Time Of War: A Childhood Memoir will be available for purchase and will be signed by the author, Ngg wa Thiong’o, on the day of event.

Celebrity stylist Brad Goreski and a team of Fashion Enforcers are on duty for five days during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week carrying out its mission. Each "stylesetter" chosen is awarded a ride to their next destination and a lucky few will receive an invitation to the culmination event in the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge.
  • This season’s Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge is getting its new look from the design team behind the newly launched DVF Home Collection. The Star Lounge, which caters to designers, celebrities, and Mercedes-Benz owners, is featuring a mix of DVF home furnishing and accessories to create a luxurious and chic experience during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
  • Lights, camera, action. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK is making its U.S. debut during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The roadster is positioned within an interactive photobooth installation in the lobby tent. Those bold enough to show off their style can be part of ongoing photo shoots each day with a chance to be featured in "THE FIX" section of The Daily throughout the week.

Founded by NBA All-Star Shawn Marion in 2008, the Shawn Marion Foundation Celebrity Poker tournament will begin at 12 p.m. July 24th at the Palms Casino Resort.

“It is exciting to bring the world of poker and entertainment together while raising awareness to help single parents,” said All-Star Shawn Marion. “I know what it feels like to have nothing. My mom is a wonderful and strong woman who worked two jobs for a long time to put food on the table to feed us and my mission is to help other single parents in the same predicament.”
