MEN'S HEALTH SYMPOSIUM Since its inception, our annual Men’s Health Symposium: Brothers Reaching Brothers has grown in size and influence. Attendance at this awareness-building event jumped by 40 percent in two years. Once a local gathering, the event has expanded to a full day of activities open to men throughout the Bay Area. The number of different screenings offered has jumped from one to six and the number of men who complete the screenings has exploded. At the first symposium, only 20 percent of men attending completed the one available screening. In 2011, 70 percent completed all six screenings: prostate, kidney, HIV, cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure. These screenings help identify issues that may affect men’s longevity. The most exciting outgrowth of the symposium is the AACHAC Men’s Support Group. These ongoing, facilitated meetings were started by men who attended the symposium, and participants range in age from their mid-40s to 70 plus.  The group deals specifically with issues of importance to men of color, who often suffer greater health disparities than other groups. www.AACHAC.org
