When Michelle Obama Wears African Fashion Designers

Michelle Obama is an unconventional woman when it comes to style. Beyond her obvious elegance, her choice of designers shows she is committed to wearing emerging designers as she is the big names. It has now been confirmed the soon to be First Lady will wear the designs of Atlanta based bridal designer Cassandra Broomfield on inaugural day. Needless to say, the fashion world is like, "Cassandra who???" We love it!

For us, it is an indication that [Mrs. Obama] is open minded. Below is our list of designers we feel Mrs. Obama should seriously consider as she prepares for her reign in the White House, and the inevitable global travels. Our selections really focused on Michelle Obama's personal style, her sexy strong broad shoulders and overall body shape. This is obviously an illustration of the many talented African designers waiting and dying to dress her!

***UPDATE: We fact checked many a seemingly credible media sources online and they reported Cassandra Bloomfield had been tapped to design Michelle Obama's dress. Thanks to our Ladybrille reader, Mystique, we now know Cassandra has put out a word denying that she has been tapped to make Michelle Obama's inauguration gown. We hope it means at the very least one African USA based designer is still in the running to create a gorgeous gown for Michelle O.

Tennis Star Serena Willams Opens High School in Kenya

Photobucket

President elect Barack Obama's Kenya affiliation is helping Kenya a whole lot! Tennis celebrity star Serena Williams, yesterday, cut the ribbon in Kenya to open her secondary school, the Serena Williams Secondary School. The school is located in Matooni, South-east of the Kenyan capital Nairobi. Secondary schools in Africa are the equivalent of high schools in the States. The star cites the need for education in Kenya; and the fact that Barack Obama's father was afforded a chance for an education which ultimately led to the soon to be President, as her motivation. Wellllllll!

What do our politicians wear? A lesson from Mrs. Obama and there is always more behind the dress.

We received this article in our inbox from a friend of Ladybrille, SA Fashion Researcher Renato Palmi who we have had the pleasure of interviewing in the past. In the spirit of our November Fashion Politics issue, his article was timely. We'd be curious to read your thoughts.

Fashion-watchers the world over were more concerned about what Mrs. Obama was wearing on the historical night when her husband took the US elections by storm. Her choice of dress has and continues to be the source of long debates within the fashion world. However, the most important point from the ongoing debate around Mrs O's choice of clothing is she wore a design made by an American designer. I then thought about our local politicians and wonder how many of them wear clothing made either by South African designers or manufactured in South Africa? Our politicians have the platform and the money to promote local designed and made apparel. Instead of spending money on stupid adverts the Proudly South Africa – "buy local" campaign should be lobbying government officials to all wear locally made clothing. On that point I also wonder if the Proudly South Africa CEO and staff all wear made in South Africa clothing?

The more I reflected on the fashion debate about the frock worn by Mrs. O on the historical night which was criticised as an "eyesore" to it looking like a "lava lamp" I thought who the American designer Narciso Rodriguez is and how and under what conditions are his clothing made? Page upon page has been written to discuss "the stupid criss-cross band around the middle" of Mrs Obama's dress but there has been nothing about his (Rodriguez) links to a company that has an appalling human rights record.

Yes, Mrs. Obama may be wearing an American designers clothing which in of its self is great. How and where was the dress made? Narciso Rodriguez is a Cuban-American who once worked for Calvin Klein. He is the recipient of Vogue/VH1 Fashion Rocks award for best designer. In 2007 fashion goliath Liz Claiborne acquired a 50% interest in his label (Rodriguez was in a financial crisis and had to sell urgently – to anyone) bringing a sinister corporate ethos to the designer's label.

Founded in 1976 Liz Claiborne is a fashion company that designs and markets a wide variety of clothing. In 2006 it posted nearly $5 billion in sales through its 30 000 global retail locations. The current global recession hitting the apparel and luxury goods industries resulted in Liz Claiborne (trading under Claiborne) "slashing its fourth-quarter profit forecast with shares dropping by 4.3%."

The company has been embroiled in numerous legal disputes and allegations about its ethical practices within it value-chain and this dilutes Rodriguez's brand by association. The Claiborne Empire has and continues to insult Native Americans by naming an apparel line "Crazy Horse." Despite protests the company continues to snub Native American appeals to change the name. With the CEO making approximately $12 million a year, numerous human rights and sweatshop monitoring organisations have expressed concerns about its labour standards.
In 1999 the company faced a lawsuit when two Human Rights Organisations filed a complaint on behalf of 40, 000 garment workers in Saipan where workers were allegedly subjected to physical abuse.

In 1999 the company crushed five attempts to organise a union in a factory based in El Salvador that was making some of its clothes. The women workers were earning 74 cents for every $198 Claiborne jacket they made and 58 cents for every $118 pair of pants. In 2000 a factory in Indonesia making clothing for the company was hit by a strike involving more than 4000 workers because non payment of an Annual Bonus.
In 2001 intimidation of workers and union officials occurred in a factory in Guatemala that supplied the company. In 2004 it was discovered that the company was using factories in Bangladesh which is known for sweatshop conditions.

Recent reports indicate that the American designer and Liz Claiborne will be or have split ending a short partnership. According to insider knowledge Rodriguez will buy back 50% of his name and trademarks. The decision by the designer is a wise and calculated move. Undoubtedly, he will make a fortune because of Mrs. Obama's choice and maybe he does not wanted to be tainted by Claiborne's poor procurement record.

The main point of this article is that there is always a story behind the dress, the designer and the company and all fashion watches must look beyond the silhouettes and the glamour. It is vital to unstitch and pick at the seams that hold our apparel together. Companies implementing fair trade and ethical practice have no reason to be fearful of such scrutiny. They should embrace it and exploit their "good practice" as exemplars of what can be done in this important global industry that employs millions of people.

Ladybrille Woman of the Month, Senegal's Yaye Marie Ba!

Gone are the days when mainstream media ignored blogs. Blogs and their authors are highly influential, wielding much power even in purchase decisions of their audience. The number of those who read blogs at least once a month has grown 300% in the past four years, and what they read strongly influences their purchase decisions, playing a key role in ushering them to the point of actual purchase, according to a BuzzLogic-sponsored study." Read article "Blog Influence on Consumer Purchase Surpass Social Networks."

In the African fashion blog world, there are less than a handful of blogs that wield such influence. One such blog is "Cos We are African" authored and published by Senegal's Yaye Marie Ba. "Cos We Are African" is well researched, fun, thoughtful and always full of goodies on Africans across the continent and in the diaspora. Yaye does an excellent job highlighting African fashion and lifestyles, both for English and French speaking Africa. With such excellence and commitment to her work, we are delighted she is our Ladybrille Woman of the Month! Enjoy our interview with her.

LADYBRILLE.com: Hi Yaye. I am excited you are our Ladybrille Woman of the Month! Tell us a bit about you?
Yaye: Thank you for this. I am very humbled. My name is Yaye Marie Ba. I am from lovely Senegal, a beautiful country on the West Side of AFRIKA. I am half Malian and Senegalese and feel 100 percent African. Meeting so many beautiful people from Mama Afrika has just opened my eyes to our beauty, our diversity. I believe in our continent and I make it a duty [t]o learn and share the little I know about us "Fabulafricana" people.

LADYBRIILLE.com:What do you do full time?
Yaye: I work for an audit firm in Dakar the capital of Senegal.

LADYBRILLE.com: Why did you start the blog "Cos We are African"? Yaye: Good question. Just like many other women out there, I've been a fan of the famous Bella Naija. In fact, reading her made me wonder how come there were no blogs on all of us African people that I could relate to? How come I didn't know much about a woman from Madagascar, for example, or a man from Botswana, a lady from Egypt, Tunisia, Niger etc. The one thing I was sure of and still am, is that there are some positive hard working African people out there that need to be celebrated. I believe that we are at a stage were we are still building our "self-esteem" as a continent. We are ready to say 'yes look at us', or 'we can do it too.' This has truly turned into a big passion of mine and I still get excited when I [discover] someone who in my [view] is doing their "thang" in whatever field, [whether] as a culinary chef, in the architecture field etc. . . I'm in awe . . .

LADYBRILLE.com: How long have you had your blog?
Yaye: I've had my e-bebe for two [2] years now. [Smiles]

LADYBRILLE.com: Your blog is very indepth. How do you find the time to maintain such rich blog?
Yaye: Ouhhhlala a lot of work. Since I'm so passionate about it, I can work on it for hours, sometimes all night. [laughs] It depends but I try to find the time really whenever I can . . .

LADYBRILLE.com: One of the things we love about your blog is the francophone aspect to it. How do you stay so connected to the African French speaking woman?
Yaye:I'm a huge magazine fan and I'm very curious. So tv, net, friends, people on the blog who give me tips and ask me to do research about specific people.

LADYBRILLE.com: What direction would you like to take Cos We are African?
Yaye: I would like to continue with this internet packaging and at some point turn it into a print publication. Inch'Allah.

LADYBRILLE.com: Who is your favorite African fashion designer?
Yaye: Way way too many! I like Bongiwe Walaza from South Africa, Hagamainty from Madagascar, I really like what he does. Toolah (Senegal),Funduzi [South Africa], Sun Goddess [South Africa], Zenka etc. . . Shall I stop? [Smiles

LADYBRILLE.com: [We get it.] [Laughs] What about jewelry?
Yaye: Tamacali [Mali] Inkenn [Niger], Ekoba Design [Togo].

LADYBRILLE.com: Who is your favorite African musician?
Yaye: Another tough one but Angelique Kidjo is by far my favorite musician out there. Not only for her music, but for her character. Listening to her powerful voice gives me the strength to push on. Oumou Sangare and Rokia Traore are also two of my favorites-two amazing voices from Mali, but I listen to musicians from all over our continent from Carmen Suza from Cap Vert [A Pennisula in Senegal and the Western most part of Africa], Kaysha from Congo, Magic System from Ivory Coast, Loide from Guinea Bissau, Estelle from Senegal , Lokua Kanza [and more].

LADYBRILLE.com: What is your favorite homemade food?
Yaye: Of course "tieboudiene"-our official dish in Senegal which is fried fish over fried tomato rice, "soupa kandja" another Senegalese dish made with palm oil and okra, maffe a dish from Mali made of peanut butter with okra on top of white rice.

LADYBRILLE.com: [Sounds delish!] Where is your ideal place on the continent for vacation?
Yaye: I would love to go the Zanzibar. I haven' t had the chance yet but blogging about it has definitely made an impact on me. Asmara in Eritrea is fascinating to me due to the fact that it kept the marks of the Italian colonization.

LADYBRILLE.com: Give us the scoop on the current state of fashion in Senegal?
Yaye:
When I moved back home [Yaye was living in the USA before her relocation to back home], I was surprised to see that in Senegal the biggest trend is "back to the roots." What I mean by that is that years ago, Fridays were commonly the days when women dressed traditionally. Now, every day is Friday and the tailors are doing an amazing job being more inovative each day. Vivid colors are big, woven loincloth are huge, ganila bazin are huge trends, basically celebrating your African identity each day is the biggest trend. Wax fabric is also making a strong entrance as well: yellow, blue, green, pink. Senegalese women are very very feminine. . .

LADYBRILLE.com: Who are the hottest designers we should know about in Senegal?
Adama Paris who started Senegal Fashion week is doing an amazing job, Diouma Dieng who is one of the major pioneers of Senegalese fashion is still doing her thing,Cole Ardo Sow, Amayel, Toolah.

LADYBRILLE.com: What are the hottest street wear right now?
Yaye:Babydolls, shirts over jeans, long summer dresses accentuated with big belt, dressed up shirts over jeans etc.

LADYBRILLE.com: What's your daily blog fix?
Yaye:
Whenever I get the chance I read:
www.projecthijab.blogspot.com,
www.our-hair.blogspot.com,
www.mwantum.blogspot.com,
www.blackbeautybag.blogspot.com,
www.amayelsnotes.wordpress.com,
www.theperfecttouch.canalblog.com, and of course
www.ladybrille.com!

LADYBRILLE.com:Thank you so much Yaye. We HEART your blog.
Yaye:
Thank you! I'm turning thirty [30] this month so this interview has definitely made my month, and to you guys at Labybrille, you guys are doing an amazing job with your in depth interviews and portraits of the amazing people in the fashion world. [Smiles] Let's keep doing it big for Africa. [Smiles]

Happy Birthday Yaye!

Criminal Assault and Battery on Uzoma Okere by Nigeria's Naval Officers

I was checking out one of the blogs I enjoy reading, Funmi Iyanda's Blog, when I saw the story and video of a young woman called Uzoma Okere. For me, sadly, this is not suprising because I saw similar acts growing up as a child in Lagos. The difference, however, is that today our generation, especially through citizen journalism, is doing something about it. Read the story below and be a part of the solution. I am asking our fellow online publishers, bloggers and Web Snob partners to help be a part of the solution. Thank you.

From the Punch Newspaper online:

Nigerians react to naval ratings‘ assault on lady.

By Chinyere Fred-Adegbulugbe, Olalekan Adetayo and Victor Sam.
Angry reactions on Tuesday trailed the Monday assault by armed naval ratings on a lady, Uzoma Okere, in Lagos. All those who reacted, including human rights activists and hundreds of online readers of THE PUNCH, described the act as barbaric and called for the prosecution of the perpetrators.

The reactions came at a time when some concerned Lagosians who witnessed and recorded the dastardly act on a camcoder released its video footage to the public. Six armed naval ratings attached to a Rear Admiral identified as Harry Arogundade, went wild on Monday on Muri Okunola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, beating and stripping the lady naked. According to eyewitnesses, the naval ratings hit the lady with their gun butts and beat her with horsewhips. She was accused of not quickly giving way for the naval officer‘s convoy on her way home in her Mitsubishi Colt car.

By the time the rage ended, Okere, who was forcibly handcuffed and dragged into a private residence on the street in a humiliating assault, was left with a battered face, blood-shot eyes and bruises all over her body. She was admitted at Kamorass Hospital on Victoria Island. As at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 98 reactions had been posted to THE PUNCH‘s website by Nigerians (both at home and in the Diaspora) who were irked by the incident, making the news item top on the list of most read stories on the website for the day.All of them agreed that no man, no matter his social status, had the right to infringe on another citizen‘s fundamental human right.

In her reaction, the Director, Gender Development Action, Ms. Ada Agina-Ude, described the assault on the lady as a display of raw power. In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, Agina-Ude called on lawyers, women and human rights activists, to rally round the lady with a view to getting justice. She said, "My first reaction is that what type of military personnel will beat a woman to that extent because of a traffic offence, assuming she even committed it. I don‘t understand that kind of mentality.” She did the right thing by getting a lawyer. I plead with the lawyer to ensure that the case is pursued to the end.”

Another activist, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, while describing the incident as condemnable and barbaric, said all those involved should be brought to book. She added that it was regrettable that a Rear Admiral who should be looked up to by junior officers for direction could allow his boys to misbehave in his presence. Also, the Deputy Director, Women Advocacy and Documentation Research Centre, Mrs. Grace Ketefe, said the naval ratings‘ action was against the dignity of a woman. Ketefe said because of her organisation‘s belief that the perpetrators should not go unpunished; it would soon address the public and petition policy makers on the issue.

But the Nigerian Navy, on Tuesday, attributed the incident to provocation from the victim.Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore David Naibada, alleged that Okere provoked one of the naval ratings when she stepped out of her car that was in front of the admiral‘s convoy and seized the horsewhip he was holding. Naibada accused the victim of making up stories to embarrass the admiral ”who incidentally was a junior officer to her father when the duo were in the military school together.”

"Dear All,

I was with Uzoma Okere in Alausa yesterday and at the Ministry of Justice thereafter, where we edited the petition to ensure it was explicit about what we want. But let's not celebrate yet. The battle has just begun. It ends when justice has been served. And we will keep at these protests until justice is administered on the rating monsters.

If you want to lend your voice to the injustice, please come to 14 Muri Okunola at 12.30p.m on Sunday November 9.We will be there till 3pm with a video camera to record the faces and voices of incensed Nigerians. From there we will proceed to University of Lagos where filming will continue at 4pm- 7pm in front of Moremi Hall.

Similar filming will take place on Sunday in London, New Jersey and Beijing. We all have a responsibility for what happened. We permit it by not speaking. We intend to broadcast the footage on local and international television in order to inspire shame in each one of us as individuals and in our government. We will continue to air the clip on rotation until justice is served. Please spread the word. We look forward to seeing you there on Sunday and please send this to all your friends on facebook.

Ebun Olatoye.
