Gavin Rajah Brings the "WOW" Factor to Durban Fashion Week 2008!

Inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel ‘Eat, Pray, Love,’ which is a story about a woman in search of love and purpose, Gavin Rajah’s goal this season was clear. With excellent attention to details and perfect embellishments on pieces such as dresses trimmed with silk flowers, elegant pin tucks, and graphic embroidery, capture the range of emotions of a woman traveling on her own and finding love. Don’t forget to add the slouchy knits to bias cut dresses to help those curves and give it a little funkiness! By the way, try using unique fabrics like silk dévore satins, cashmere, knitted bamboo and light weight mohair to really put the 'umph' in it.

Rajah indeed accomplished his goal and brought the “WOW’ factor to his mission accomplished ‘La Belle Dame Sans Regret’ Spring/Summer 2008/9 collection at the recently completed Durban Fashion Week 2008.

Rajah’s range of relaxed separates, tailoring and signature occasion wear pieces encouraged women to embrace this season’s romance. His suits which incorporated relaxed tailoring in cotton blend suiting with Lycra content, enhanced fit and showed a confident contemplative woman in search of love while jetsetting.

His knitted silk/cotton and bamboo pieces simply spelt pleasant and cool evenings. He also created sexy teasers with cotton and silk voile dresses and swimwear. Overall, a stunning collection! Check out some pics from the collection and each piece can sooooo be a trend!

Ladybrille Woman of the Month, Tomiko Fraser

        by Toya Thomas

This month, Italian Vogue honors African/black beauties in the fashion industry in an all Black July issue featuring some of the top names in the fashion industry. Here at Ladybrille, this month, we honor a woman whose triple threat of beauty, intelligence, and talent has her effortlessly standing beside the great faces featured in July's Italian Vogue. We speak of the one and only Ladybrille Woman of the Month, Tomiko Fraser.
Tomiko, actress and model, emerged on the fashion scene as a model in 1997. By 1998, her striking beauty and articulateness earned her a coveted spot as the cosmetic giant Maybelline's first African-American spokeswoman. Tomiko would go on to grace the pages of fashion magazines such as Mademoiselle, German Vogue, Glamour, British Marie Claire, Elle Top Model, Italian Amica, and Cosmopolitan. Her brilliance extended into television earning her spots as guest host on E! Entertainment, "Wild on the Big Apple" and her own half-hour model show in 1998 also for E! Entertainment.
Today, while Tomiko still models, she is passionate about giving back and is involved in community projects and organizations that give and educate others, especially women. For Tomiko, her legacy is not one that should be limited to being and actress or a model. It should extend to how she made a difference an empowered women to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Indeed, this is reflected by her creation of the Tomiko Fraser's Goddess Gathering, a place focused on the empowerment of women. Get to know our beautiful Ladybrille Woman of the Month with some of the random questions we posed to her.
LADYBRILLE.com: How did you first get into the entertainment business? Tomiko: I was discovered by a model scout while working as a hostess at a restaurant in New York City.

LADYBRILLE.com: Tell me, how does it feel to be Maybelline's first African-American Spokesmodel?
Tomiko: It is truly an honor to not only be the first African-American woman that Maybelline signed to an exclusive contract, but to represent the iconic brand and be a part of the confidence building they do for women around the world.
LADYBRILLE.com: What is your motivation\driving force for success? Tomiko: My motivation is my zest for life. I truly believe we create our reality by our thoughts, words and actions. I feel so blessed to live my life and want to share my happiness with others.
LADYBRILLE.com: As a national spokesperson for the Lupus Foundation of America, what other organizations do you support and devote time to? Tomiko: The Lupus Foundation of America is very close to my heart because of my sister, Shneequa. Witnessing firsthand the devastating effects the disease has had on her life, I want as many people as possible to be informed about lupus. I believe that the more informed we are, the closer we are to a cure.
I'm also very passionate about female empowerment, which is why I created "Tomiko Fraser's Goddess Gathering," four [4] years ago. I believe that women can do just about anything if they believe they can. The Goddess Gathering is a place for women to let their hair down, discuss issues that are important to them, and find solace in knowing that other women support their growth. I will continue to build on this movement and hope to reach women around the globe with this important message.
LADYBRILLE.com: July is Film Issue for us. So, we have to ask you what directors or producers would you like to work with in the future and why? Tomiko: I'd like to work with directors and producers that can see past gender and skin color. Unfortunately, women of color are still in the minority when it comes to getting the more visible roles on film and television. That needs to change.
LADYBRILLE.com: What's next for Tomiko Fraser? Tomiko: What isn't next is the question. I am busy creating a movement of empowered women that I know will recreate the current shape of our world. I plan to expand the Goddess Gathering concept and will incorporate empowerment workshops and seminars. I also plan to write a book, as well as Goddess Centers around the U.S. Finally, my dream is to have my own talk show.
LADYBRILLE.com: What advice would you give to the Ladybrille reader's on pursuing a career in the entertainment business? Tomiko: I would advise your readers to remain true to themselves. They should never compromise their integrity in pursuit of a career in entertainment. At the end of the day, they should be able to look in the mirror with their heads held high because they see their true selves reflected back.

Lights, Camera, Action, July Film Issue!

Lights, Camera, Action! Our Ladybrille July issue is filled with wonderful personalities in the film business that will inspire, push and "get you to gettin'!" We begin with the gorgeous fashion model/actress, Tomiko Fraser. Tomiko's trailblazing path as the first African-American woman to be the spokesperson for giant cosmetic company Maybelline, her truly positive spirit, entrepreneur skills and determination to empower women through her company "Tomiko Fraser's Goddess Gathering" earns her our much coveted Ladybrille Woman of the Month!
Another exciting personality is a face you've probably been noticing recently across the world wide web. You know her as Bianca in Toyota's current campaign focused on reaching the affluent African-American woman in the States, "If Looks Could Kill." It' s the one and only Nigerian/Filipino Actress Femi Emiola . In an exclusive interview with us, Emiola talks Africa, film and her drop dead killer looks. You are gonna love it!
But of course we always get down to business. Indeed, that's where the reputable Emmy-winning producer and two-time NAACP Theater Award winning playwright/producer, Mike Ajakwe, comes in. Ajakwe has written/produced for shows such as Soul Food, The Parkers, Martin, Moesha, Between Brothers, The Brothers Garcia, Built To Last, Sister Sister, Entertainment Tonight, Talk Soup, Steve Harvey’s Big Time, and Eve. He has also sold TV pilots to Paramount Television and Warner Bros. He will be giving us the insider scoop on breaking into the business of film.
Our month would be incomplete without making sure you get to meet two brilliant names in the film business. The first is Ebbe Bassey. This young woman has barely entered the business but is already causing a stir. Her recently produced short film Siri Oko Fo debuted at the Cannes International Film Festival in May of 2008 and has subsequently featured in the Black Hollywood and Boston Film Festivals. We can't wait to introduce you to her! The second is A-list beautiful highly independent and intelligent actress, Nollywood's Stephanie Okereke. To put it succintly, Okereke is determined to take Hollywood by storm as well as rebrand herself as a fashion and film icon in Africa's entertainment industries.
We hope you enjoy this issue. By the way, we will continue featuring our lovely African models throughout this month. We figure while Vogue Italy's July issue features all Black models, FINALLY! It cannot possibly capture/shine the spotlight on the many gorgeous African beauties out there. Enjoy and of course let us know what you think and ways we can improve by sending your feedback to editor(at)ladybrille.com.
        Remain Blessed,

        Uduak,
        Editor-in-Chief
