Ladybrille African Fashion News, #24

Glad it is Friday!!!! Didn't get time this morning to dance to my excitement. lol! Had to run off to court. It was a long but exciting day in court and I am officially signing off from legal work, at least for the rest of today. Which leads me to splurge on fashion!!!!
I had to of course do the weekly collection of fashion news related to/about Africa just for YOU. But, before I get into it, I love the part of anticipating what trends will be for next season. Usually, New York and European fashion markets drive the trends globally. Let me do something different by anticipating through the eyes of Africa the fashion trends for Spring 2008 from NY Fashion Week. I have a strong feeling we will see the color choice and designs reminiscent of South African brands Lunar, Story and a a bit of Bongiwe Walaza [especially with her color choice]; in the recently completed Sanlam SA Fashion Week. We shall wait and see! Meanwhile, I thought it nice to be reminded of the fashion trends we saw during the Fall 2007/2008 via way of the esteemed Tim Blanks along with Vogue's Anna Wintour, Sally Singer and Andre Leon Tally--as we observe trends for Spring 2008.

Sanlam SA Fashion Week Summer 07/08

Sanlam SA Fashion Week just completed its Summer 2007/2008 fashion week. Check out the collections that really impressed us! Photos courtesy of Sanlam SA Fashion Week.
Lunar: was a steady climb from cool to happy as silk fabrics with color palettes like gray, blue and cool yellow/gold complimented classic shapes to evoke a relaxed state of mind and fine fluidity.

Story: Every woman has a story. The label "Story" understands this. Its collection in organic/beige tones of silk and linen fabrics translates into womanly stories of sleek, sexy, mature and unequivocal beautiful confidence.

Bongiwe Walaza: is adept at making a woman look sassy and sexy in her designs. The designer displayed brilliant cuts of shwe shwe contrasted with color palettes of rich browns and gold.

Clive Rundle: came to play this summer! His use of vibrant colorful fabrics such as yellow and purple while "maintaining the sexy" is sweet! Most of his collection can be worn as is or deconstructed for a day at the office.

I love Leroy: With fun, flirty floral print dresses matched with bolero type jackets in neutral tones, what is there not to love about Leroy?

Poetry: Ladybrille's Poetry for you: Relaxed fit is in. Bold colors are in. And, clothes like Poetry's that make all say, to you, “hey, beautiful!” is definitely in!

Mantsho: Palesa Mokubung, the designer behind the Mantsho line who previously worked for SA’s Stoned Cherie, shows she is a force to be reckoned with via her functional, African inspired yet cosmopolitan collection.

Thando Zamxaka: has a fresh take on shwe shwe with the line's artistic yet functional silhouettes.

Ladybrille Fashion Police-Nigeria Fashion Week

A glimpse at some of the few good looks at the recently completed Nigerian Fashion Week [NFW]. If only there could be more of this consistently. . .

The Oshi at Nigerian Fashion Week
There is no doubt that fashion weeks are quite important in promoting the visibility and brand of a fashion designer. That is where fashion media and retail buyers, among others, converge to report, purchase and help facilitate the movement of fashion products, clothes and accessories, to the most important persons in the fashion chain--the consumers. Needless to say, fashion weeks within Africa are highly significant as it permits the creative minds within the continent to not only create a demand for their products within Africa but also in the European/USA fashion markets. That is why it is so disappointing when a fashion week in Africa is poorly executed both on the event production and designer end.

I speak of the recently completed Nigeria Fashion Week. With respected Nigerian fashion designer names such as Voyage, O Emporium, Deola Sagoe, Tiffany Amber, Jewel by Lisa, Nikki Khiran and for makeup "House of Tara" or Bobby Signature for hair, Nigeria ought to be at the forefront of leading Africa’s fashion industry!

Nigeria Fashion Week should be an excellent opportunity to showcase unmatched creativity, quality garments, emerging and established designers, quality fashion production, effective marketing and public relations, quality models and unmatched national media coverage and corporate sponsorships, at the very least. All of these appeared to be sorely lacking at the recently completed Nigeria Fashion Week held August 19th-22nd, 2007, at Shell Hall in the Muson Center, Lagos. The event produced by Legendary Gold Limited, from the observations of the pictures captured from the event, only gets a "is this the best Nigeria can do?" Some of Nigeria’s models are considered the most beautiful women in the world. They have strutted catwalks globally and inter-continentally-- think Oluchi Oweagba-Orlandi, Agbani Darego, Warebi Martha and Adebisi Sowemimo. Where are these models at the country's fashion week? Where are the sponsors? Media? The fragmentation of the industry is so obvious and the “you are on your own” attitude screams through the recent pictures from the event.

I refuse to believe, with all due respect, that Legendary Gold's Limited Nigeria Fashion Week is a representation of Nigeria's Fashion industry or fashion week in Nigeria. Value and strength is created when all work together rather than individual pursuits that highlight one and not everyone. Supermodels should be teaching non-supermodels how to walk. Nigeria’s seasoned and famed designers should not only be a part of other countries' fashion weeks but a part of Nigeria’s Fashion Weeks. They also should be willingly to train others on, at the very least, presentation.

Everyone benefits and the country looks good, especially if the stamp of "Nigeria" is placed next to the "fashion week." Nigeria’s Fashion Industry cannot continue to lag behind the South Africa, Ghana or Lesothos of the world. A country with over 140 million people and counting . . . this is frankly embarrassing. With that said, I turn to the Ladybrille fashion police who we avoided working too much because LFP was definitely on active duty, more than it bargained for, at the recently completed Nigeria Fashion Week. We couldn't cover all so log on to http://www.purefoto.com/ to see more pics.

Runway Nonsense and Ingredients is this seriously the best Nigeria can do?

What kind of a designer thought this was okay?

The clothes could work but what's with the hair and makeup? Common!

It would be helpful if the backdrop of Nigeria Fashion Week has a big visible sign so we know that it is Nigeria Fashion Week. Beyond that, seriously, is this a joke? How is Nigeria supposed to be taken seriously, especially in Europe & USA fashion markets?

The hair? Where are the seasoned hair stylists?

I don't know where to begin. I am lost. The dress could work but the puffy sleeves? Hello?

Forget the fact that there is no consistency on the runway in most of the exhibited looks seen on http://www.purefoto.com/. But, is this an attempt at TLC's Scrubs? The outfit and the hair, either way, worramess!

Very creative? NOT! Taking a wrapper and tying around this model is not haute couture or even ready to wear. I am seriously confused.

Why is he caged? Oops I meant chained. Is this is an attempt at a Nigerian DMX? Like "what [does] the designer who created this look really want" because he/she is effectively scaring me.

Famed Phrophetess Juanita Bynum Gets Serious Beating from Preacher Husband

Very disheartening is the news of Owen Wilson's suicidal attempt. Things are definitely not as rosy as they seem. I hope he is able to resolve the issues that led to his feeling of hopelessness and the false idea that life is not worth living. Isn't it funny how someone like Owen can have fame, wealth, friends and family and still feel so alone? He is definitely not alone. "According to the National Institute of Mental Health, "[i]n 2004, 32,439 [approximately 11 per 100,000] people died by suicide in the U.S. [Further], more than 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable mental disorder, most commonly a depressive disorder or a substance abuse disorder."

Another disheartening news is what can only be described as a beat down of the famed Prophetess, Juanita Bynum, by her equally famous preacher husband Thomas Weeks at a Renaissance Hotel parking lot in Duluth, Georgia. I will never forget when a buddy of mine from law school invited me over for a Juanita Bynum session. It was my first introduction to her and she made an impression. We sat in my friend's little apartment in San Francisco, about nine years ago, and watched Juanita Bynum's "No More Sheets." This woman has changed the lives of many. Nevertheless, it is clear you just never know because despite her encouragement, healing and empowerment of women who have been raped, molested, been victims of domestic violence and other sexual abuses, she ends up marrying a man, a preacher for that matter, who gives her the beat down of her life, literally. Isn't it ironic? Ladies, stay encouraged and be careful with the one you say "I do" to.
