Fashion Shopping Ghanian Style!

What is the first thing Ladybrille does even before she gets to do all the tourist stuff in Ghana? Find the closest mall/boutique/fashion market and shop, shop, shop! Talking with the locals, I kept hearing two names pop up: "Woodin" and the "Center for National Culture Textiles Market" aka the Art Center in Osu, Accra. Osu was my first stop: The fun was not only making some great purchases: tote bags, clutches, necklaces and some Ghanian colorful fabrics to design my own wear, I also got to do the haggling thing. Ladies, especially my African sistas, y'all know what I'm talking 'bout. You can't go to the market and not do the bargain thing. Oh no, no, no! What fun would that be?

For contemporary modern silhouettes cut out of African Fabrics, Woodin is the spot

The Art Center is fun with all the great negotiations and seeing some of Ghana's Fashion culture

The clothing fabrics here are cool plus you can get pure leather products such as purses, handbags, totes

I purchased some of these bags.

There are surrounding villages that you can go to to purchase these items at a fraction of the cost in the city and see the cratfmanship .

Hotels in Ghana

As of 2000, Ghana reported a population of only 18.4million. The current count appears to be 22 million. The country is indeed small when contrasted with its neighbor, Nigeria, which has over 120 million. However, you would never guess Ghana was that small with the amount of hotels in its capital, Accra. It seemed like there were so many hotels within 15mins of each other it was like wow! Anyway, I chose to feature the "Golden Tulip." The hotel had an unmatched excitement/ambience. It's located only 5mins from Accra's Kotoka International Airport and was a fun place to stay. A Ladybrille woman would appreciate the fact that they had a hair salon and a mini retail shop.

Plus, there were too many gorgeous African men you could "men" watch all day. . . It was hard not to say, "I like that one. Wow! and that one too. Wohoooo! What about him?" Lol! It's a great hotel for people watching, meeting business and social acquaintances and enjoying nightly jazz performances. Besides, I was also impressed that they willingly got on the band wagon as sponsors for the UN Catwalk the World Ghana event. It's nice when inter-Africa/foreign businesses in Africa give back. A bit social responsibility never hurts.

Damba Lounge-this was the spot! Everyone just seemed to hang out here and there so many interesting personalities and some African hotties.
Fitness/Staying fit is an essential part of a Ladybrille woman. It's nice to know you can travel with your "fit" lifestyle intact.

The tropical like gardens located behind the hotels garden was a nice way to relax and take it all in.

UN Catwalk the World Ghana-Fashion for Food

I was recently at the UN Catwalk the World event held in Ghana. Supporting the event which was held on Dec. 22nd, 2006 was a no brainer. An opportunity where African fashion designers get a platform to showcase their work while serving the objective of raising monies towards the United Nation's World Food Program's [UN WFP] goal to halve world hunger by 2015, particularly among children, brilliant! The show was overall a success raising $27,000 at the end of the night. However, a key improvement for future shows would be to extend invitations to buyers from the USA & European retail giants/boutiques i.e. Macy’s, Fred Segal e.t.c. Needless to say, it would give African designers a platform to have access to market their products to the Ladybrille woman in the West. Check out some of the fun pics from the event and comeback for a week of beautiful places and things to do in Ghana!

Nigeria's Designer Deola Sagoe brought Africhic Sexy Back! Supermodel Oluchi Struts one of Deola Sagoe's designs on the runway. I am generally not a fan of the puffy slips and bagged hem baby doll dresses but this look works. The heart shaped neckline, cute bow and brilliant combination of rich textured silk with 100% cotton ankara printed fabrics makes this number haute!

Kofi Ansah wowed the audience with his diverse take on the Kente fabric. Especially to my African-American fashion-forward readers, who knew you could be a princess in a gorgeous ballroom gown with fabrics made out of Kente?

Stoned Cherie was very urban chic!

Ozwald Boateng was spectacular with his "Men in Black" type theme

Luxurious and supercomfortable looking pants. Ozwald's confident swagger is super sexy. Here he is doing a cool dance at the end of his show.

Damon Dash, Rachel Roy, Ava and Boogie were in Ghana for the event

Left, Obaro Ibru, Chairman for Catwalk the World, and Mathew Mensah CEO for Catwalk the World, honor Nollywood's actor Ramsey Noah for his contributions to organization.

Guests also included Noni Gasa, 2005 Face of South Africa Sanlam Fashion Week
